Over-sized pants and tight tops: Fashion Feminism at its Best

From iconic figures such as Aaliyah, to the dynamic trio of TLC, all the way to our most recent popstar Ciara, these celebrities display a trend that sparked during the 1960's to evoke a new kind of feminism. This trend clearly stated that sex appeal can be attained without the skin-tight outfits that most of their competitors wore. You must of course have hard rock abs to pull it off. lol. In everyday life this trend is emulated by boyfriend jeans which surfaced last year and can be worn in many different ways as seen below. They're sleek and comfortable yet extremely bad ass.

Bebop: When Creativity Had No Boundaries

Bebop is a form of jazz that came about in the 1940s that stressed virtuoso soloing and playing off ordinary resolution of musical themes. Bebop encouraged artist to venture into creative realms that had been unexplored before, melodically venturing off of original harmony. The era encouraged creativity and taking what was old and making it your own, like the music a lot of the artists were unique and varied off the path too. They had a style unique to themselves that transcends a generation and can be used as inspiration to this day. The beautiful thing about jazz is it builds off the generations before and develops into another voice, another sense of reason just like fashion. Mavericks like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk were influenced by the preceding generation's adventurous soloists, such as pianists Art Tatum and Earl Hines, tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young and trumpeter Roy Eldridge.

The 1939 recording of "Body and Soul" by Coleman Hawkins is an important antecedent of bebop. Hawkins' willingness to stray—even briefly—from the ordinary resolution of musical themes and his playful jumps to double-time signaled a departure from existing jazz.

Style: His fedora and formal minimalist look added to his cooler than cool demeanor.

Charlie Parker also known as the Bird was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat generation, personifying the conception of the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual, rather than just a popular entertainer. His style – from a rhythmic, harmonic and soloing perspective – influenced countless peers on every instrument.

Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of free jazz. He was prolific, organizing at least fifty recording sessions as a leader during his recording career. A pioneer in history his music had an increasingly spiritual component through his career.

Style: The thin lapel tailored cotton sport coats added to his spiritual and laid back personality. His style expresses thoughtfulness, freedom, and yet has a sense of decor.

Johnny Griffin

Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer considered one of the most prolific american musicians ever. Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire.Often regarded as a founder of bebop, Monk through time evolved and so did his music. His compositions and improvisations are consistent with Monk's unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations.

Style: His style was as unique, creative and off the beaten path as Monk himself. He wore incredible patterned blazers, sweaters and shirts, great unique glasses and hats that resemble a Buddhist monk at times. His style transcends generations and screams independence, freedom, and creativity.

This summer one thing that I have noticed is that I am seeing more and more straw hats and fedoras around. They offer perfect protection from those blistering hot days where the sun seems to just not leave you alone and look pretty fly as well. They can be worn casually with some jean shorts and a t-shirt and also be dressed up with some nice linen pants and a button down. Me personally, I believe that every man should both get a stingy brim (one with smaller brim perfect for city style) and a panama (Large straw brim that alumni rock at graduations) for those weekend excursions. They will add a sense of style to all your outfits. Definitely go to your store (Uniqlo, Jpress, J.Crew etc.) and pick one up. I promise its well worth it and if nothing else on those hot days your body will thank you too.

Save Our Souls

I just wanted to take a minute to recognize, Save Our Souls, a new Boston Based streetwear brand that has just release their premier Summer 2010 Lookbook. The name SOS evolved from the idea of freeing the power that producers have over the consumer. From what I've seen of it so far, I would classify this brand as customary urban streetwear, and would like to encourage these fellas to keep the designs coming. I'm always excited to see fresh new brands, and I'm especially anticipating the designs of someone we all know all too well. Just be on the look out.

The Nashville based Jean producer and store Imogene + Willie turn 1 years old this month and do it in old American fashion announcing a partnership to feature their classic American denim with J.Crew. As J.Crew continues in the direction of workwear and maintaining the American image this definitely will be an exciting partnership. Imogene + Willie is run by a couple that breathes denim having worked in the business for years and coming from denim families. Paying homage to denim of yesteryear, Matt and Carrie work and live out of their shop, a retro gas station in Nashville. They create premium denim that though is rooted in the traditions of denim of the 40s and 50s has modern touches and cuts. They worked together in a previous family business designing, developing, and producing premium denim apparel for some of most well known denim brands in the world - Levi’s, Lee, Girbaud, Ralph Lauren Polo’s RRL, Rogan, J Brand, Diesel and Replay. They developed new processes and inventions that led to the aesthetics of modern day garment making and finishing, and the premium denim aesthetic that drives apparel today.

Take Ivy

So upon my usual blog browsing, I stumbled across something that made me truly excited. Craig Cohen and Wes del Val will release an English remake of the prep fashion classic, Take Ivy that truly transformed how people see prep fashion globally. Before this I have only seen images and pictures scattered through out the web. Japan's obsession with prep ivy style garments is now legendary, and in hope of preserving the classic nature of this ivy culture the Japanese during the 1960s documented the style. In particular one man, T. Hayashida created a book that would influence a nation, Take Ivy by photographing students of different Ivy League campuses in 1965. This book is now considered to be the bible of the Ivy League look in Japan and has influenced fashion in enormous ways. Normally the book sell on Ebay if lucky enough to see it there for around $2000, but thankfully to Craig Cohen, Wes del Val, and Powerhouse Books you can order an English remake that will be released August 31st for $16.50 on Amazon. Talk about a steal, I am definitely going to cop this.

Kanye West's The Horus Chain and Pyramid Ring

Kanye always rocking the bling, gave the world a closer look of the Horus Chain and Pyramid Ring on his blog and BET awards last night. Horus was the sky god and the savior in the Egyptian culture so its interesting that Kanye would wear this along with his song Power. Each takes the form of an Egyptian motif. Personally I think the rings are dope and the chain reminds me strikingly of his Jesus piece. The question is what is this return to the motherland getting at is it simply a cool accessory or more of a statement. I guess have to wait for Mr. West to let us know.

One major trend that I have noticed resurfacing in the last few months is the wearing of the prep classic, knitted ties. These ties came to popularity in the late 70s and 80s . The perfect mixture between casual and dress these ties add a nice edge to an outfit really setting off a crisp oxford. They are available at stores like Uniqlo, Brooks Brothers, J.Crew, and more than often your local thrift store.

How to wear it: Can either wear it with a nice white oxford shirt, fitted jeans, wingtips, and Blue blazer to give a classic clean casual look or dress down a suit by the addition of one of these nifty little accessories.

So if you haven’t noticed by the mere 90-degree weather we have been having its summer time. Oh no what does this mean, does it mean I can’t get dressed anymore and that I can only wear shorts? What about my suits? Can I still wear those? Well never fear, just because summer is here doesn’t mean you can’t look dapper. It just means you need to make a few minor adjustments. So I have collected some summer essentials to make sure you can still make that statement and stay cool all at the same time.

Suits

Summer time means its all about cotton and linen. Looking crisp well maintaining cool is the number one objective. With that said it is ok to go out and buy a nice summer suit. I would recommend you go one of three routes either the straight tan and brown cotton suit for more traditional occasions, seersucker when want to make more of a statement and during those summer weddings and functions, and linen when its just to hot not too. Also make sure that the suits are tailored correctly, makes a huge difference. The pants should fit well and the leg should barely be hovering over the shoe. Secret: It’s all in the details. Wear well-patterned shirts underneath such as gingham. Keep and maintain using a bold tie. Don’t be afraid to venture of and add a colorful springtime pocket square and utilize brown shoes as a way to make a statement but make sure to wear a brown belt if doing this.

Shorts

Rugby recently wrote an article on their blog about wearing shorts for those casual Fridays. The secret is to wear traditional flat front chino shorts and to make sure to dress up the rest of your outfit by wearing a clean well fitting oxford shirt and tie combination. Also make sure to wear dressier shoes, nothing less than a boat shoe should be exhibited and I personally believe a nice brown shoe sockless never steered anyone wrong in these summer months.

Summer Tie

It is ok to let go of those traditional heavier colored ties and venture into some with a lighter more whimsical summer feel. Summer is about bright colors and making a statement, with that I would look at going with more of a repp tie or a brighter color. For the bolder at heart I would also venture to the realms of floral patterns, seersucker and bowties. Who said that dressing up doesn’t mean having fun. One of the brands I have seen that does these ties well are Pierpont Hicks and Brooks Brothers, but you can also find them at stores such as Barneys, Uniqlo, J Crew, and Urban for pretty decent prices.

Secret: Wear the appropriate patterned shirt make sure if wearing a light shirt to wear a tie that contrasts so that the tie stands out. Don’t wear the same color tie and shirt. Keep it light.

Shoes

GQ featured an article about moving past the classical boat shoe and sporting something a little more modern and colorful. Though I am and will always be a proponent of the original Sperry Topsiders I do enjoy some of these newer more colorful looks. Cole Haan, Sperry, and many other brands are featuring this newer rendition of the classic boat shoe.

Secret: Wear it sockless and with jeans or pants that rest just above the shoe. Also more tailored pants will really bring attention to the detail and not drown out the shoes.

Pocket Squares

It’s all in the details and what better way to add some distinction and excitement to an outfit than to equip it with a nice eye catching pocket square. It will increase the swagger of the outfit a thousand times, seriously. This spring its all about making sure to veer away from the classic white pocket square and get a pattern that is both stylish, says spring, and compliments the rest of the outfit. Secret: Avoid doing to much by not being to matchy with pocket square, shirt, and tie. They should compliment not be the same, or else you may end up looking you have on a tacky NBA draft suit. Also make sure not to do to much pattern play if have a pattern pocket square match it with a solid shirt.

A New Point of View: Warby Parker

This past week I set down with Jeff Raider of Warby Parker to talk to him about his partners (Neil Blumenthal, David Gilboa, and Andy Hunt) and his new brainchild. After we both discovered that the other was an avid Celtics fan (yes a plug for the Celtics), we began to discuss how they decided to get started and any advice he may have. Their company is taking the eyeglass industry by storm with an incredible business model that is only bested by their incredible glasses and selection. These vintage-inspired frames came to life after the 4 Wharton MBA students set down, tossed around a few ideas and realized they were onto something. They discovered if they take out the middleman that they could provide the same quality at a much lower price than competitors. With quality fashionable eyeglasses under $100 it is no wonder heads are turning. But they also had a social responsible twist, for every pair bought; one pair will be donated to one of the world’s 500 million visually impaired, impoverished people through nonprofits such as restoringvision.org. When I asked him how they decided to dive into the industry, he said you have a choice you can either go big or not. They clearly decided to go big when they packed their bags to go to China the summer after drafting their business plan to speak with vendors. He also left me with some tidbits for young entrepreneurs reminding the importance of figuring out who your customer is, doing the proper research, but at the end of the day doing what you love and see a need for. It is clear Warby Parker is on its way, having been recognized by the likes of GQ, Vogue and other major fashion media. Raider says, “When I saw a classmate pull out a monocle in one of my classes, I was like yes we have arrived.”

Persol: Made in the Shade

So the weather has been incredible and I need some new sunglasses. I decided on getting a nice pair of Persols. Why you ask? Because not only are they a classic, but they are also entirely too fly.

History: Persol is an Italian eyewear company specializing in sunglasses. The name is derived from "per il sole," which, in Italian, means "for the sun." Formed in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti, Persol originally catered to pilots and sports drivers. Presently, the company is famous for its durable sports sunglasses. Its trademark is the silver arrow, and several of the company's glasses feature this symbol.

Investing is the New SHOPPING

So we all continually swipe our credit cards, buying merchandise from our favorite stores, but do we ever stop to think about the corporate company that controls this merchandise? Last week, I hosted a panel on the basics of investing with a focus primarily on retail companies. We looked at popular brands at Boston College such as Steve Madden, Coach, and J.Crew Group, which are also top tier companies that are doing particularly well in the market. Our goal was to educate women on how to research if a company is a good investment, and what they did to battle the reccesion. One example was Steve Madden's launch of their new men's boot line.

By looking at recent articles in the Wall Street Journal we were able to see the rise in the retail industry, and the article infact exclaimed how J Crew had gotten its "swagger" back. Whether or not this is the first time swagger had been used in the WSJ is questionable, but what is definite is the importance of understanding this growth.

So why is "Investing the New Shopping"? Our goal is to encourage people to invest in the company rather the product in order to further increase their future assets. You could spend $100 on a pair of jeans from JCrew today, but 10 years from now, those pants may not fit you, or maybe out of style. If you had invested that $100, you could possibly have over $1,000 which would be able to by you even more products that you desire. So start shopping around for companies and start investing.

DC Chilling

This past week my brother Aaron and I found ourselves in the capitol for our cousin's book signing (Root And Branch: Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall, And The Struggle To End Segregation). The signing was at this laid back and chill spot on U street called Busboys and Poets. The crowd was diverse, the conversation was thought provoking, and the burger wasn't half bad either. The book is about the friendship and relationship between the two great lawyers. It looks at the legal strategy they implemented in order to fight segregation. You guys need to check the book out! Before we left we got some time in hanging out with some DC friends, shopping in Georgetown and GW before we left. Straight DC chillin!

Button Up: Oxford Shirt

Oxford shirts are a staple in every man’s closet. They are the perfect laid back commentary that says I really belong. They are a very comfortable way to make a statement and create a clean look. There is nothing crisper than a well-tailored oxford shirt. I was first introduced to the oxford shirt at an early age by my dad and later perfected wearing them casually through long days of prep school and wild times in the summer heat. You can wear them with a nice repp tie and colorful pants to create that classic go-to-hell look rampant on the campus of New England prep schools or create a more rebellious look through adding a leather jacket, fitted, jeans and some fresh kicks. Either way I know I don’t go anywhere without one.

History:

The oxford cloth button-down shirt, named for the esteemed university, originated as a sport shirt. At the turn of the last century, polo players in England would wear formal, long-sleeved shirts made of oxford cotton—a breathable and sturdy basket-weave cloth. The collars were made with buttons to prevent them from flapping during matches, starting a trend soon adapted for tennis shirts as well. The oxford first appeared in the United States at the turn of the century, and its popularity took off in the 1950s, by which time the look had become associated with classic Ivy League style.

Workwear: Like a warm piece of Americana

As people have often heard me repeat time and time again, style is the reflection of your story and who you are. As a people living in this nation we truly have to live in our clothes, work in our clothes, and be American in our clothes. It is no wonder that one of the classic styles that continue to be rejuvenated and developed is workwear. What other form of clothing is so versatile yet so functional and classic. If you haven’t noticed workwear is dominating fashion and being incorporated into almost every aspect whether it be mixing a chambray or tan shirt with suits or wearing those redwing boots and thermal Woolrich pants with a nice knitted sweater. Style has become reminiscent of the early 30s and they tell a tale of old pulling ourselves out of the Great Depressions, banding together, and more than anything living up to our heritage and developing legacy. In any case its about time that we see Americana come back and you know I have a feeling it wont be going out of style anytime soon because at the end of the day what are clothes for if you can’t live in them.

Style Tips:

Wear workwear with more formal garments such as a tie.
Keep it simple do not wear too much plaid or a complete outfit made of khaki
Khakis look nice especially against a chambray shirt
Dickies are never the thing to do unless you really are working
Fit is important just because workwear doesn’t give you an excuse to have ten sizes to big or you stomach busting out the seams
Wear boots with more formal wear. My personal favorite are the bean boots and Clarks dessert boots with nice wool pants a repp tie and sweater, classic.
Look in your parents closet workwear only gets better with time

Band of Outsiders 2010 Spring Lookbook

Repp Yourself: The Repp Tie Examined

This week I decided to impart some knowledge on an accessory that I think is crucial for every man to have in their wardrobe, the repp tie aka the prep school tie. It is simply the diagonal striped ties that sport different colors and patterns. I have always had a love for these ties ever since my prep school days, my life. Repp ties tell a story. They tell what school you go to, what team you may be on, or whom your family is. They truly reflect on the person wearing them. They can be either dressed up with a nice pocket square and suit or dressed down with a nice button down and jeans. Simply put they always make a statement and are so very versatile.

History:

The repp tie is named after the weave of silk traditionally used in its making – traces a dual heritage, to both playing fields and battlefields. In the 1880s, British schools adopted official colors, which made their way onto not only ties (hence, “old school ties”) but caps and blazers as well.

By the early 1920s, drinking societies, athletic teams, and private clubs own striped tie. The amazing thing about repp ties is they tell the story of the owner. Sometimes the story behind the tie is as interesting as the tie itself. The orange-black-blue-and-yellow tie worn by the old boys of Wellington College takes its hues from the ribbon of the Crimean War medal.

The popularity of the repp tie in America began in the 1920s, when it started to appear in Ivy League wardrobes. The Prince of Wales, who wore the maroon-and-blue tie of the Foot Guards, undoubtedly inspired many imitators, as he so often did. In 1920, Brooks Brothers ran the diagonal stripes down from right to left, the opposite direction from regimental and traditional club ties. This created outrage in Britian where they wore it the opposite way and did not wear the tie of a group outside of where they belonged.

Once, one could tell an American tie from its British counterpart because the stripes of the British version descended from the left; nowadays the diagonal direction is merely an aesthetic choice to be made by the designer. But the ties associated with stories and history still hold an aura and specialness that cannot be replicated. They tell the story. I love my Belmont Hill tie because every time I put it on I am back in the 8th grade sledding down headmaster hill. Awww the good old days.

How to wear it:

They can be dressed up with a suit and nice pocket square or be loosened up and complement a nice sweater and jeans. Make sure that the stripes complement the rest of outfit.

Harper's Ferry: Wale and Bad Rabbits

Last weekend, Wale graced the stage of Harper's Ferry after Bad Rabbits, the equally talented opening act. I usually don't like attending concerts where I don't know the artists music very well however, their stage prescence definitely gave a show to remember. "See the world in the eyes of another, and your world will never be same", a phrase that recently came to life after my recent trip to Nicaragua. During our trip, we were able to immerse ourselves into the Nicaraguan culture so as to get a taste of living life on the lines of poverty. The stories heard of triumph against dictatorship and a machismo society were impeccable. However, what was most compelling about the trip was the hospitality and genuine happiness of the Nicaraguan people. The families and indigenous people provided me with one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I hope that I can someday return to give them just as much as they gave me.

So if your around me enough you will quickly learn one of the subjects that has been plaguing me lately is the fact that the Japanese seem to be able to create classic Americana fashion better than Americans (Look for an upcoming article on topic). However American is coming back in a huge way and we have already seen it in the resurgence of brands like Red Wings, Pendelton, and Woolrich. However I say all of this too say that Japanese publication Popeye features a photoshoot for best styles of 2010 spring/summer styled by Tomoki Sukezane for their February 2010 issue. Sukezane is one of the premier stylist and regularly puts together genius outfits. Anyway check it out.

Open Ice: Tales at Fenway

So few know know this but I love hockey and in fact played it. However in ninth grade when I realized to compete against prodigies and kids destined for the NHL I would pretty much have to sell my soul to the hockey gods, I stopped playing competitively. However I was fortunate enough to go root my old high school's hockey team on to a 6-5 overtime victory on the outdoor ice at Fenway Park. Yes we are balling enough to play at Fenway. After watching the game I may have to lace my skates up and go out to the pond. Get on it.

However I will say it is nice to see thee two geniuses create and devise ways to expand our minds and tell stories that continue to captivate the minds of so many. As you all know or probably should know Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist is one of the great fashion influencers of the 21st century. His blog The Sartorialist is well known for its classic honest point of view and look at street fashion. Sartorial means fits to form and tailored. In this video he describes what makes him successful and provides a few tidbits of knowledge. He also hints at a show and some future business ventures. He says most blogs are just 20 year olds shooting 20 year olds and fashion, I don't quite agree with that statement but to each his own. So this year instead of staying in Boston and bundling by the fireplace equipped with wool socks, we decided to celebrate in a little different style. We packed our duffles and suitcases and headed to the Bahamas just in time to get tanned and enjoy the festivities of Junkanoo. What ensued was pure delight and madness. I can say we are going into 2010 with tans. Take that snow.

Fashion Recap: Best of 2009

In light of tough economic times, 2009 still presented many great fashion trends, so I thought I would highlight some of my favorites.

Leggings: I'd like to start with leggings.

Leggings weren't newly introduced in 2009, but they definitely prevailed. Women went from rocking simple black leggings under tunics, to wearing colored, printed, metallic and even jean-like leggings. This was the one article of clothing that every woman possessed in their closet, but I seriously begun to wonder if some would ever go back to wearing pants!

Celebrities that embraced this trend:

With every trend comes a few fashion faux pa's, when it came to leggings, one had to be very careful how they rocked the sheer style, in order to prevent exposing more than planned. And who better to exhibit this common mistake than the one and only Paris Hilton:

Ripped stockings: Along with the legging trend, came its compliment of ripped stockings in the fall.

This sultry, raunchy trend was a perfect example of how women have the ability to turn an everyday mishap into pure fashion.

Slashed Denim: Speaking of ripped, slashed denim was definitely another big hit this year.

We were slashing denim so much this year, one could wonder if the jeans still functioned as pants.

Denim Jackets: Denim served in more ways than one this year. Inspired by the 80's, denim jackets returned in 2009 to serve as accents to any outfit.

Fall Jackets: The Glitz and the Glam
Fall jackets as a whole this year came in many varieties. Of course, the classic staple, the leather jacket prevailed among all the rest, but it faced some tough competition with the sequin and faux fur frenzy. Military style jackets also created a huge craze, especially after the death of the great Michael Jackson.

These are only a few of my favorites from the year of 2009. It has been a bumpy ride, but we were still able to see some great styles. I am jumping out of my seat, awaiting what 2010 will bring. I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, as we witness the turn of another decade.

Sternberg has steadily expanded his offerings and now produces a full men's line. In 2009 he was named menswear designer of the year by the CFDA. Lady Gaga seems to be the "talk of the town" lately. Some hate her, many love her, personally I'm indifferent, but I absolutely love the "Bad Romance" video. It's something new and different that I haven't seen in a while, which in all essence, sums up who she is. The outfits rocked in Lady Gaga's performances and in this video alone, speak ATTENTION. This past week I was able to attend a forum with Lupe Fiasco! Yes lupe and was lucky enough to have front row seats, how I love UPENN. We were also surprised to have the presence of the great Darryl McDaniels, DMC of Run DMC. But you know though Lupe and DMC were the reason a lot of us attended, the actual message and purpose for the forum had a much greater impact on the crowd. He was there to promote the new documentary that he and a number of other artists will participate in called The People Speak on the History Channel. Based off of the famous book by Howard Zinn, The People’s History of the United States. This movie is sure to give a wider perspective of democracy and take us outside of the history books and hopefully inspire thought and discussion. With all that said check it out, because like I said before we have a chance to make a difference!

Zulema Griffin

So I had the faboulous oppurtunity of meeting Zulema Griffin at a business conference hosted by Harvard last week, and I have to say, I am extremely inspired. As a previous Ford model and contestant on Project Runway, Zulema Griffin is truly a wealth of knowledge about the world of fashion. Her experience in the fashion world led her to recently jumpstart her own clothing line which she displayed online, causing her to be the first to pioneer the first Internet launched fashion show. What makes Zulema so unique is her concern with the lack of African American prescence in the fashion industry. After the conference, she spent over an hour with me to speak about these concerns and her eagerness to get more African American men and women involved in this dominated industry. She has also recently started working on a traveling film documentary called "Ink Bleach" where she explores the roots of African American culture and its dissappearance. I was extemely impressed by not only her passion for this industry, but by how much she cared about making a difference in each individual, which was clearly displayed by how much time she was willing to spend with me. If I do decide to partake in a fahion career, I would hope to have the fantastic opportunity to work with a woman this great. Below is an interview she had at one of her fashion shows.

So as many of you have noticed those breezes that we so much appreciated in the summer are continually getting colder and not so appreciated. Simply put fall is here. That means its time to bring out those fall and winter wardrobes. Luckily for you we are going to do some features in the next few weeks on fall and winter style to make sure that you stay warm, look crisp, and keep those heads turning. Phillip T. Annand: Reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest

Hey all out there. This is a new feature focused on up and coming designers who are truly making a global impact in their youth. Today I want to focus on Phillip T. Annand the founder and designer of The Award Tour. Not only does he have one of the best names known to mankind, he is also killing the street wear game. His inspiration for his clothing is “capturing that moment in our lives when we feel on top of the world and having it embodied in clothing”, dope right! This 19-year-old mogul still attends college while writing for Hypebeast and designing (we are complaining about a little bit of homework). His goal is to marry street wear with high fashion in order to make a brand that is long lasting and will reach well beyond the confines of being just another graphic tee. Annand believes inspiration is all around and he really run with that inspiration using it to design and create. Check it out!

MadeMe Fall 2009 Collection: Tough Love

As my dope friend mentioned earlier Supreme produced a simply clean and classic collection for Fall/Winter 2009. The MadeMe line is quite the contrary. Erin Magee left Supreme to design streetwear and I must say she has been successful. Her Fall 2009 collection represents beauty and rebellion using "traditionally masculine silhouettes with feminine fits and New York Street sensibility". The studded denim vest is hands down my favorite piece, along with her signature leather jackets. Magee is a beginner in the industry but her work is comparable to many veterans. I look forward to seeing more of her.

Abercrombie Sues Beyonce?

I’m a little late but I had to put in my 2 cents about this one. Abercrombie recently filed a law suit trying to stop Beyonce from releasing her new fragrance “Sasha Fierce”. They claim to have already trademarked the name when they launched their men’s cologne “Fierce” in 2002. On the other hand, Beyonce claims to have sent a letter of intent application with the U.S Patent and Trademark Office in 2008. In my opinion, these two fragrances will be appealing to two different audiences so I don’t see why they can’t have similar names. Or is Abercromie just afraid of a little competition? Either way, I am very anxious to hear the outcome of this dispute.

Boots: A Fall/ Winter Necesity

October just hit and temperatures are already dropping below 50! Absolutely ridiculous. But good news is, its time to pull out those boots. Those who are friends with me know that boots are probably my favorite article of clothing. Invest in a great pair and you can wear them all year around with almost any outfit. You can't go wrong with a classic flat slouchy boot, however, this season its all about extremes. That is ankle boots/booties and over-the-knee boots. Ankle boots are a not so new trend that has just been modified. You'll find many celebs rocking peep toe booties, studded and lace up ankle boots. They are a cute classy choice that go perfectly with just about anything, especially skinny jeans and dresses. Now lets speak about my new obsession, over-the-knee boots! They're a bold fashion statement that every woman needs to make. They appeared in almost every catwalk at fashion week, and are a part of every designers 2009-2010 collection. Whether its Jimmy choo, Steve Madden or even your local Aldo you need to go buy a pair. But be warned, this look reminds many of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, so be careful when choosing the matching outfit or your look can be mistaken for "trampy". Here are some celebs who rocked these styles very well.

Euro Chic redefined at Boston Fashion Week

Many of us dream of attending the infamous fashion week in New York, but location, time and money always seem to be reoccurring obstacles. Fortunately for us Boston natives, fashion week will soon be upon us as well. Or at least a little taste of it. In less than a week, the Emerging Trends Fashion Show will be held right in Park Plaza. General Admission tickets are only $40 but if you’re on that “ballin” status I would recommend getting VIP tickets which include access to the After Party. This a great networking opportunity to meet with designers, models and media. If you’re going to be in Boston on Friday October 2^nd, I suggest you add this event to your agenda. Fun: No Assembly Necessary just College:

This past week reminded me why I love college. I felt like I was living in an Asher Roth video as I watched people stumble down locust walk and stammer out the words to their favorite songs at the top of their lungs at Smokes. This week was full of great times including an appearance at the 215 magazine party, the Blue Martini, and of course trips to McDonalds at 2 am.

Senator Kennedy is Burried

This is truly a sad day not only in politics but way beyond that. Anyone who believes, advocates or honors social rights and equality has to acknowledge the impact that Senator Kennedy had on this world. It is amazing to think that he is gone, but it is even more amazing to see the amount of people who have come to Roxbury to commemorate the life of this man. You can truly feel the love that has manifested itself here. He is truly an American hero and his impact will stretch way beyond his death. We have a responsibility to keep his mission alive and to inspire others and instill in others the ability to hope. Until its inate to hope and dream in every child in this world we can not rest. The most important impact we can make in this world is to change others lives poitively and he has done just this. Marian Wright Edelman's said it best. "Service is the rent we pay to be living. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time." Thanks Ted for reminding us all, we will miss you.

Good old Ralph Lauren doesn't disappoint with this line. It is more conservative than some of other lines coming out but still take risks (in a recession year it is expected). Ralph Lauren is the definition of functionality and clean clothing that retains that classic crisp prep look. It is about layering the right way. Fall offers the chance to see a wardrobe. He offers versatility. It is good to know in a world that is continually evolving and becoming cluttered we always have something good and classic to come home to!

Locust Walk

Oh yes I see it now locust walk crowded with students running to class, people hanging out on the benches talking about summer, and new beginnings. The smell of ivy, ambition, and new shenanigans are brewing in the air. I love it. I move back to Penn this Monday. Though I am sad to see summer go I am excited to see what my senior year holds.
